Figures released today by the Office of National Statistics show the number of people aged 16 and over who were in work in the first three months reached 30.43 million. This figure has risen by 722,000 since the same time last year.

Not surprisingly then, the number of unemployed people has fallen, with the unemployment rate at 6.8%. Between January and March, 2.21 million people aged 16 or over were actively seeking work whilst unemployed, a fall of 309,000 from the same time last year.

The figure may be distorted by the number of people in self-employment and perhaps the number of start-ups growing, showing further signs of a strengthening economy.
